{"id":76294,"date":"2022-03-09T13:24:37","date_gmt":"2022-03-09T13:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.heygirls.co.uk\/katya_staging\/news\/qmu\/"},"modified":"2022-03-09T13:24:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-09T13:24:37","slug":"qmu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox.heygirls.co.uk\/katya_staging\/news\/qmu\/","title":{"rendered":"Free plant-powered period products launch at QMU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qmu.ac.uk\/\">Queen Margaret University (QMU) Edinburgh<\/a> will be able to access a new range of free sustainable period products, thanks to a new partnership with Hey Girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2018, the Scottish Government became the first country in the world to make period products free for all and actively supports colleges and universities in tackling period poverty by providing free period products for students, which can cost up to \u00a38 per month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76374\" src=\"https:\/\/sandbox.heygirls.co.uk\/katya_staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/qmu.png\" alt=\"QMU x Hey Girls\" width=\"711\" height=\"816\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thanks to this government funding and the new collaboration with Hey Girls, Queen Margaret University students can now benefit from this enhanced period poverty initiative with access to a range of single-use sustainable products or reusable period products on campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The collection, which includes reusable day and night pads, non-applicator tampons and applicator tampons, was launched on <strong>International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong> in conjunction with the Student\u2019s Union. Students were able to learn about the products and pick up a supply via a \u2018period pop-up stand\u2019 at the Musselburgh campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-76375\" src=\"https:\/\/sandbox.heygirls.co.uk\/katya_staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/qmu2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"711\" height=\"814\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Daisy Williams, University &amp; Colleges Partnership Manager at Hey Girls, said:<\/strong> \u201cWe are working with QMU to address period poverty and its environmental impact by providing students with period products made from 100% recyclable or biodegradable materials, alongside a selection of sustainable and reusable items. Our products are \u2018plant powered\u2019 \u2013 having been made from a combination of cotton, bio-based sugar cane, corn starch, and sustainable bamboo, to ens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ure all students can have a stress-free and free-of-charge period while protecting the environment.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research by Plan International UK found that period poverty affects 1 in 10 people across the UK. In Scotland, the number is thought to be closer to 1 in 4, leaving many people \u2013 including students &#8211; to have to prioritise purchases or go without period products at all.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>Aasiyah Patankar, Student President at Queen Margaret University Students\u2019 Union, added:<\/strong> \u201cThe theme for International Women\u2019s Day this year is #BreakTheBias. As such we\u2019re tackling period inequality by supplying period products to all QMU students that need them. There are lots of myths and taboos that surround periods and the on-campus la<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unch on International Women\u2019s Day aims to break these down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;We love Hey Girls, not just for their eco-conscious period products, but also for their social good.
