The University of Central Lancashire Students\u2019 Union (UCLanSU) has become one of the first Students\u2019 Unions in England to provide a selection of free and reusable period products to students. Products are being provided by Hey Girls, a Scotland based social enterprise company that was set up to tackle period poverty.<\/p>\n
UCLan students will be able to access free sanitary products, including a range of tampons, sanitary pads and menstrual cups on campus in their Students\u2019 Union Building, thanks to an initiative by UCLan SU. Hey Girls is providing the products, all of which are environmentally friendly and plastic free.<\/p>\n
The Students\u2019 Union undertook this initiative as a result of student campaigning, after using The Big Ideas platform on the Students\u2019 Union website. The union hopes the University of Central Lancashire will take note and move to provide staff and students with free products across the campus, ensuring that period poverty does not limit any UCLan student or staff member.<\/p>\n
Lily Green, Vice President Welfare of UCLan SU, said: \u201cUCLan students really care about free access to period provisions and the impact that period poverty can have. We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Hey Girls to bring about change with and for our students. We now need to see a commitment to supporting students on this matter from the University of Central Lancashire, and from our own Government. We deserve universal access to a basic right to support us with something we cannot control, and we will no longer be quiet about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Celia Hodson, Founder of Hey Girls, said: \u201cIt\u2019s really fantastic that the University of Central Lancashire Students\u2019 Union has committed to tackling period poverty and period equality by providing free products to students in the Students\u2019 Union bathrooms.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are incredibly supportive of the Scottish Government\u2019s commitment to provide free sanitary products to all students in Scotland, but we need to see the rest of the UK catching up. Period poverty and access to products is an issue UK wide, and only by working together can we tackle it.<\/p>\n
